Car Craft Magazine has long been a haven for fans of American muscle cars, as well as a source for hardcore DIY types who like to spin the wrenches on thier own cars. In keeping with these themes and as a means of showing readers that cool cars can be built on basic budgets, Car Craft launched Project Cheap Street Chevelle in the fall of 1994. The basic premise was to locate the right car - something from the muscle ear of the late '60s/early '70s - and then fix it up gradually, all while sticking to a budget. To keep the initial cost down, the car would be in need of some renovations, but the end result would be the type of street machine any Car Crafter would be proud to own. After continuous use as a text mule and surviving grand-theft auto, the Cheap Street Chevelle became the grand prize drawing for the 2003 Hot Rod Magazine Power Tour. The car was treated to another makeover by Steve Strope at Pure Vision Design and awarded to a lucky Power Tour participant. Model features include fully detailed big block engine, simulated side body moulding, standard Malibu (non-padded) rear bumper, Weld Racing wheels, low profile tires, bench seat, four speed on the floor, working hood flapper, and custom simulated vinyl top.
